“I think there’s something you should know
I think it’s time I stopped the show
There’s something deep inside of me
There’s someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don’t think that I’ll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man ”
It doesn’t hurt me.
You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn’t hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I’m making?
You *be running up that hill*
You and me *be running up that hill*
And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh…
You don’t want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware that I’m tearing you asunder.
There is thunder in our hearts, baby.
So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don’t we?
You, *be running up that hill*
You and me, *be running up that hill*
You and me won’t be unhappy.
And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building,
If I only could, oh…
‘C’mon, baby, c’mon, c’mon, darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C’mon, angel, c’mon, c’mon, darling,
Let’s exchange the experience, oh…’
And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems. x2

I’m your worn in leather jacket
I’m the volume in your fucked up teenage band
A pack of smokes and a six pack
I’m the dreams you had walkin’ down the railroad tracks
You and me
I’m your first taste of romance
I’m your first broken heart on a Saturday night
Guys like us ain’t got no chance
But I’m the thing that keeps you and me alive
But not forever
Chorus:
So take me down the road
Take me to the show
It’s something to believe in
That no one else knows
But don’t take me for granted
I’m the blood on your guitar
I’m that wave you caught back in 1975
I’m as strong as a thousand armies
I’m as soft as a pedal on a long stem rose
I am love
Chorus: x 2
So take me down the road
Take me to the show
It’s something to believe in
That no one else knows
But don’t take me for granted
I’m with you when you’re born
You can take me when you die
With all the reasons why
But don’t take me for granted
The newest effort by this band put out a couple of months ago is so dammed good. I first became familiar with them through a song called pancakes for one. That song is a far cry from anything witnessed on the album “Hissing Fauna, Are you the Destroyer?”. The writing has become far more complex. Kevin Barnes has tapped into a pop funk album about mental breakdowns, breakups, and girls who don’t have soul. It’s a carnival of sounds that are both pop sensible and complex. In a way it reminds me of Beck’s Midnight Vultures; it’s danceable while speaking to a generations’ anxiety about issues concerning relationships and mental health. It’s a little less coherent, so it’s like Midnight Vulture’s weirdo uncle who just doesn’t have it as together.
“The Past is a Grotesque Animal” is a beautiful song about a failed relationship that clocks in at just under 12 minutes. It’s an electronic rock epic that will make you think about any relationship that you may ever had. With lines like “It’s so embarrassing to need someone like I do you/How can I explain I need you here and not here too” and “Somehow you’ve red-rovered the gestapo circling my heart/And nothing can defeat you/No death, no ugly world” it makes me think that Barnes is a talented poet as well as musician. There don’t seem to be enough of that combination. “A Sentence of Sorts In Kongsvinger” is a casio inspired song that is both fun in music and a little dark in meaning. The point is that it’s so fun that you hardly notice the mental breakdown, which is kind of what it’s like when you try to combat one of those episodes.
I don’t think that everything on this album is great, but it’s definitely something more interesting than other things I have heard of late. I was never too impressed with them until I heard this album and now I think they’re pretty ok. Give it a listen and if you don’t have the patience for whole album sit downs (shame on you!) then at least listen to The Past is a Grotesque Animal.
Belle and Sebastian have released a new album called The Life Pursuit. It is pretty much back to basics for this band. It seems that after Dear Catastrophe Waitress (what I consider one of their best) they have decided to give fans what they want, but not exactly what I would have wanted from them. The Life Pursuit sounds a lot like previous albums such as The Boy With the Arab Strap, Tigermilk, and If You’re Feeling Sinister. They are doing what they do best here which is to be a 60’s pop band. All of the tracks are fairly short and there are harmonies and chorus parts aplenty.
I enjoy The Life Pursuit though I don’t think it’s very brave for them. Dear Catastrophe Waitress wasn’t very well received by hardcore B and SB (as my old acquaintance Choggy would refer to them) fans. They weren’t used to something so well produced and put together. Some gems off of this album are White Collar Boy in which there are some excellent vocals laid down (especially the end), The Blues are Still Blue is also really interesting as far as vocals are concerned, and Sukie in the Graveyard. We Are the Sleepyheads is a pretty daring track as far as this album is concerned. What they have done here is what they do best; combine somewhat depressing lyrics with a really happy sounding song, unfourtantly I don’t really feel that way about the rest of the songs on the album. I really enjoy this track for its weirdness and fast pace. Dress Up in You and The Act of the Apostle II are really powerful at evoking emotion.
I think that anyone who has enjoyed this band as long as I have will like The Life Pursuit. It’s a well put together pop album and is what anyone who is familiar with them would expect. Compared with the rest of their work it’s definitely not their strongest as far as lyrics and music are concerned but it’s a nice little listen.
On sunday night I went to the Launchpad to go see the Romeo Goes to Hell play with Teenage Bottlerocket The The Phenomenauts and The Epoxies. It started relativley early (around 7pm) so the crowd for Romeo wasn’t that great and I was drinking the whole time that Teenage Bottlerocket were playing. What I did manage to see were two pretty incredible bands give excellent performances.
The Phenomenauts came on looking somewhat like DEVO. I say this because one of the band members wears a helmet with glasses attached. They all have matching space outfits down to white and black creepers. What they sound like is Rockabilly from the future. They have taken the normal sound that you would associate with that kind of music and multiplied it by ten. Don’t worry there’s still an upright bass. At one point they had the crowd screaming that earth is the best. They got the crowd pumped and sounded really tight.
Then The Epoxies came on. They were also wearing pretty tight outfits. I would describe them as Synth Punk. I’m not sure if that’s a real category but it’s the best way to describe them. Their guitars had lasers attached to them and much to the chigrin of people in the blacony were flashing them up there and at the disco ball. Their energy is fantastic. Roxie Epoxie dances around while the rest of the band does their thing. Both sets were complete with confetti and toilet paper.
Do yourself a favor and go see these bands when they come to your town. They are both on tour together, and if any of my Jersey friends are reading then you can check them out in Philadelphia@The Barbary on June 4th and in Asbury@Asbury Lanes on June 7th. For the rest of the country the tour dates are located here: Tour Dates
