I was recently given a comp downloaded from the internet entitled “Indie Rock Playlist: Best of 2008″. I am a pretty huge loser and have always enjoyed “indie rock” which I thought included a wide range of music. That could be me. It could be that I don’t stay in that genre and my tastes are ecclectic. It is possible. Maybe I am just too old to get it.
Yet now, it seems, that these bands make very “cute” music that include at least a xylophone, a stringed instrument, and perhaps a girl and boy duet/group sing along. It sounds very little like rock and very much like some kind of music they would be selling a mac or a small fuel efficient car with. There are certain bands and songs that do stand out from this comp, but for close to 150 songs, the majority sound very very similar. This is not to discount the songs that I do genuinley like. There are at least a few. Like the Electric Six song…but they pretty much fucking rule anyway.
Is this a valid complaint? Am I too old to like cute neo folk? I mean it is as if it’s fashioned to sound like Belle and Sebastian except less musically talented and less harmonic. Half of these kids can’t even sing. Perhaps this is just a precursor to have the pirate band I am currently a semi part of to blow the fuck up. I do not know.
