Jenny Lewis And The Watson Twins

Last night I had the enjoyable experiance of seeing Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins play live. The set consisted of crowd favorites Rise Up with Fists, The Big Guns, and You Are What you Love. The show was pretty amazing and well put together. It was At the First Unitarian Chruch in Philadelphia. Usually at that Venue they have the shows in the basement but this show was in the sancuary.
I got there late due to some traffic on 95 but i still didn’t miss anything. I did have to stand at the back though and the lighting in there is pretty terribble. The first band hadn’t even started yet. They weren’t very good because I think they were nervous. Their timing and harmonies were off. I don’t remember who they were or who the next guy was, but it didn’t matter because when Jenny Lewis came on it was all worth it. They started the set with Run Devil Run, the first song off of the album. The cool part about it was that each member of the band came up on stage one at a time. Jenny had her guitar and you could hardly hear her voice. She got to the mic and it all came out with The Big Guns, the second song off of the album. After that the set didn’t follow the album at all, but they sang everything in a really nice order. It flowed well.
Jenny Lewis’ stage presence was quiet. I felt like I had travelled back in time. It almost felt like a revival. Her voice paired with the Watson Twins harmony is incredible. It sounded like honey. I almost cried during Happy. The band also played some news songs which were pretty awesome. She did some acapella with the Watson Twins and came into the audience for It Wasn’t Me. My favorite part of the show was when she did Born Secular. This isn’t even my favorite song on the album but they made it such an intmate performance. She was sitting down at the keyboard and it started with just her playing the drum beat with the keyboard. The drummer joined in and slowly the rest of the band did. As the song was ending each member walked off the stage until it was just the drummer. The drum solo he did was fucking amazing. We were yelling at the end. The whole show was intimate and comfertable. I was sad that the indie rocker kids didn’t move around or clap to the songs more. It would have made it ten times better.
You kids! Get into the audience participation!!!
