My sister, Angela, has been using the word futzing lately. Usually she uses it within in this context: “stop futzing around”. Before her overabundant use of this word I had never heard it before. I wondered if the word was even real, and if so what are its origins. Poking around on the interweb I found a few definitions:

From Whatis: Futzing or “futzing around” is unstructured, playful, often experimental interaction between a human being and a computer, product, or any technology, sometimes but not always with a productive purpose in mind. Futzing can be pure play, learning by trying, or an attempt to achieve breakthrough insights.
Futzing may also be an amateur attempt to fix something that is not quite broken yet. A reader defines it as “the last thing you do with something just before it stops working anymore.”
    AND

From thefreedictionary:futzed, futz·ing, futz·es Slang: To waste time or effort on frivolities; fool. Often used with around.
[Possibly blend of fuck and putz.]

I prefer the second’s origins. I am disappointed that Angela didn’t somehow come up with it on her own. We’ll get one…someday.
